Commemorative event dedicated to the 109th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide in Prague

24 April, 2024

On April 24, on the occasion of the 109th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, a wreath-laying ceremony in memory of the victims of the Armenian Genocide took place at the Armenian khachkar in Prague. The ceremony was attended by the Dean of the Diplomatic Corps in the Czech Republic, Apostolic Nuncio, Archbishop Jude Thaddeus Okolo, the Chairman of the Czechia-Armenia Interparliamentary friendship group Marek Benda and other members of the Parliament, the Director of the Eastern Europe Department of the MFA of Czechia Jana Hynková, Ambassadors of Greece, Cyprus and Argentine to the Czech Republic and representatives of many other Embassies, Czech public persons, journalists and the members of the Armenian community.

Liturgical Service was held at the Church of the Holy Spirit in Prague by the Spiritual Pastor of the Armenian Apostolic Church in the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary Archimandrite Barsegh Pilavchyan. Ambassador Ashot Hovakimian addressed those present at the event with a message dedicated to the symbolism of the day and a word of thanks, noting that improper condemnation of past crimes and evasion of punishment create fertile ground for genocide denial and justification, and ultimately leads to the repetition of mass atrocities. Commemorating and respecting the dignity of the victims of genocide and genocidal crimes are not just expressions of solidarity, but are one of the most important actions in the prevention of such crimes in the future. Archbishop Okolo, Ambassadors of Italy, Cyprus and Croatia, charge d'affaires a.i. of Syria and Serbia were present in the Church.

Afterwards, the documentary "Ani Forever: History of the Forgotten City of Medieval Armenia" created within the cooperation program between the Center for Early Medieval Studies of the Faculty of Arts of the Masaryk University in Brno and the Embassy, with the financial support of the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports of the Republic of Armenia was presented to the attention of the audience.
