Events on the occasion of the 108th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide in Prague

24 April, 2023

On April 24, on the occasion of the Commemoration of the 108th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, a Liturgical Service was held at the Church of the Holy Spirit in Prague by the Spiritual Pastor of the Armenian Apostolic Church in the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary Archimandrite Barsegh Pilavchyan, followed by a wreath-laying ceremony at the Armenian Khachkar in Prague. Ambassador of Armenia Ashot Hovakimian addressed those present at the event with a message dedicated to the council of the day.

The event was attended by the Chairman of the Czechia-Armenia Interparliamentary Friendship group Marek Benda, Ambassador of Argentina, Chargé d'affaires of Syria, Deputy Heads of Missions of Serbia, Croatia and Poland, representatives of Czech public and journalistic circles.

On the same day, Ambassador was present at the launch of the "Lemkin train" project, organized by the Teresienstadt Center for Genocide Studies, dedicated to the life and work of Raphael Lemkin. Addressing the audience, the Ambassador in his speech referred to the invaluable contribution of Raphael Lemkin in putting the term "genocide" into scientific and legal circulation, for which the mass crimes committed against the Armenians in the Ottoman Empire were the basis. The Ambassador stressed the importance of proper condemnation of mass crimes, recognition of the truth, prevention of new genocides and crimes against humanity, discrimination on ethnic, religious and racial grounds and the fight against manifestations of intolerance. In her speech, the Israeli Ambassador Anna Azari also detailed the connection between the creation of the term "genocide" and the crimes committed against Armenians.

In his speeches, the Ambassador Hovakimian also emphasized that impunity brings new disasters, and Armenians living in Nagorno-Karabakh are still facing the danger of genocide and ethnic cleansing. Azerbaijan's continuous aggressive policy, the anti-Armenian rhetoric, the actions aimed at depriving Armenians of their homeland, erasing the Armenian trace are nothing, but a manifestation of genocidal intentions.

At the end of the events dedicated to the commemoration of the 108th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, the screening of "Zulali" film and a meeting with the Armenian community, organized by the Armenian Youth Association of Czechia, took place.
