02 August, 2021

On August 1-2, within the framework of his working visit to Serbia, the Ambassador of the Republic of Armenia to Serbia Ashot Hovakimian visited the city of Vrnjačka Banja, one of the best spa resorts in Serbia.

On August 1, the Ambassador met with several dozen Armenians from Vrnjačka Banja, their family members, and compatriots from other Serbian cities. In 1922, the several families who survived the Armenian Genocide, were resettled in the town of Vrnjačka Banja in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. Representatives of the Ter-Poghosyan (Der Bogosijan) family from the fourth to fifth generations were present at the meeting. The participants were greeted by the Mayor of Vrnjačka Banja Boban Đurović.

On August 2, the Ambassador visited Vrnjačka Banja Municipality and met with the Mayor Boban Đurović. During the meeting the prospects of establishing partnerships with one of the cities of Armenia, future cooperation, development of tourism, cultural ties, mutual visits were discussed. The Ambassador handed over to the Mayor a copy of the agreement signed by Hakob Belanyan and Mkrtich Ter-Poghosyan on behalf of a group of Armenian refugees on February 15, 1922, according to which Armenians were allowed to relocate to Vrnjačka Banja. The sides touched upon the possibility to celebrate the centenary of that event in the city next year. Also present at the meeting was Čedomir Artinovic, a well-known Serbian-Armenian businessman of Vrnjačka Banja origin.
