On July 30, within the framework of his working visit to Serbia, the Ambassador of the Republic of Armenia to Serbia Ashot Hovakimian visited the city of Sokobanja

30 July, 2021

On July 30, within the framework of his working visit to Serbia, the Ambassador of the Republic of Armenia to Serbia Ashot Hovakimian visited the city of Sokobanja, where he was received by the Mayor of Sokobanja Miodrag Nikolić and members of the city council. Prospects for future cooperation, development of tourism, cultural ties, mutual visits were discussed with the municipal authorities of Sokobanja, one of the best resorts in Serbia.

The Ambassador visited the Monastery of the Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel, better known as the Jermenčić (Armenian) Monastery, on the top of Mount Ozren near Sokobanja. According to the Serbian tradition, it was built in 1392, when the Armenian soldiers and monks, who were part of the Ottoman army during the Battle of Kosovo, did not want to fight against the Christians, left the army and reached the peak of Ozren, where they settled and built a monastery, which for centuries became known by its name Jermenčić.

Ambassador Hovakimian, emphasizing the special significance of the monastery in the Armenian-Serbian historical-cultural relations, offered to initiate on July 26, 2022 (the day of the monastery's naming) and to make it traditional the annual Armenian-Serbian festival in Jermenčić.
