Ambassador Ashot Hovakimian visited Novi Sad, the capital of Vojvodina

13 March, 2020

On March 13, in the framework of the working visit to Serbia, Ambassador Ashot Hovakimian visited Novi Sad, the capital of Vojvodina. Ambassador was received by the President of the Provincial Government of the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina Igor Mitrović and the Mayor of Novi Sad Miloš Vučević. During the meetings the Parties discussed the prospects to establish relations of partnership and to enhance the cooperation in culture, science and business contacts between the Province of Vojvodina and Shirak Marz in Armenia, as well as between the cities of Novi Sad and Gyumri. This preliminary agreement was reached between the Presidents of Armenia and Serbia during the visit of the President Armen Sarkissian to Serbia. The possible participation of the Armenian artists in the ,,Novi Sad 2021 – European Capital of Culture,, programme was also touched upon, due to the historic presence of Armenians in Novi Sad.
Ambassador visited the historic site in the centre of the city, where the Armenian Church was erected in the past, and laid the flowers to the Monument of Armenian-Serbian Friendship and to the Memory of the members of the crew of the Yugoslav airplane crushed during the humanitarian mission to the earthquake-struck Armenia in 1988, as well as to the tombstone of the Armenian Janaziazyan (Cenazi) noble family. Ambassador also made a tour of the Museum of the City of Novi Sad at the Petrovaradin fortress, accompanied by the Director of Museum Vesna Iković and the author of the ..Armenian Church in Novi Sad,, monography Ljiljana Lazić. The remaining objects from the erased Armenian Church are stored and exhibited in the Museum.
Armenians moved to Novi Sad from Belgrade in the middle of 18th century, due to the Austrian-Ottoman war and occupation of Belgrade by Turks. Although the number of Armenians barely surpassed 100 people in the best times, they played a significant role in the social, economic and financial life of the town. The Armenian Church built in 1746, was demolished in 1963 due to the construction works in the centre of the city.
