Commemorative event dedicated to the 109th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide in Belgrade

On April 19, in Belgrade, on the occasion of the 109th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, the wreath laying ceremony in memoriam to the victims of the Armenian Genocide took place at the Armenian Khachkar (cross-stone) in Zemun Park, in front of the Church of Saint Archangels Michael and Gabriel.

The ceremony, which was attended by the Ambassadors of Greece and Cyprus to Serbia, the diplomats of the Delegation of the European Union, Embassies of France and Russian Federation, the representatives of the National Assembly and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Serbia, Head of the Office of the Patriarch of the Serbian Orthodox Church, many Armenians from Serbia, Serbian friends of Armenia, was organized by the Embassy of the Republic of Armenia to the Republic of Serbia and the Union of Armenians in Vrnjačka Banja.

For the first time, the Pontifical delegate to the Balkan countries, the Primate of the Armenian Diocese of Romania, Bishop Tatev Hakobyan, was present and prayed at the ceremony.

Ambassador Ashot Hovakimian and the President of the Union of Armenians in Vrnjačka Banja Čedomir Artinović, representatives of Embassies and organizations laid wreaths and flowers on the Khachkar. The Ambassador Hovakimian addressed those present with a message dedicated to the council of the day, in which, in particular, he drew the attention of the audience to the recent public statements of the President and the Foreign Minister of Serbia, in which the need to recognize the Armenian Genocide was expressed.

In the evening of the same day, under the patronage and with participation of the Ambassador Ashot Hovakimian, and with support by the Union of Armenians of Vrnjačka Banja, the presentation of the Serbian translation of the monograph "Ani, the capital of the Armenian Bagratids" by Aelita Dolukhanyan, the corresponding member of the Armenian National Academy of Sciences, took place with the author's participation. The book was published by the Vesna Pešić’s publishing house, whose contribution to the spread of Armenian history and art in Serbia is highly appreciated.
