On September 21-22, Ambassador Ashot Hovakimian paid a working visit to Montenegro

22 September, 2021

On September 21-22, Ambassador Ashot Hovakimian paid a working visit to Montenegro.

On September 21, the Ambassador visited the Faculty of Political Science of the University of Montenegro, where he met with the Dean of the Faculty, Professor Milan Marković, the teaching staff and students. The Ambassador spoke about the aggression of the Azerbaijani-Turkish tandem against Artsakh last year, the hostile policy against the Republic of Armenia, the historical ties between Montenegro and Armenia, answered many questions of the students.

On the same day, the Ambassador was received by the Mayor of Budva Marko Carević. The interlocutors expressed satisfaction with the resumption during the summer times of the charter flights from Yerevan to Podgorica and Tivat, interrupted by the pandemic. Ambassador Hovakimian stressed that Montenegro, and especially Budva, is considered a favorite resort for the citizens of Armenia. At the end of the meeting, the Ambassador and the Mayor answered the questions of the local media representatives. The meeting was widely covered by the Montenegrin press.

On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Armenia, on September 21, in Budva a reception was given on behalf of the Ambassador of the Republic of Armenia with the participation of several dozen compatriots living in Montenegro. In his welcoming speech, Ambassador Ashot Hovakimian spoke about the establishment of partnerships between Armenia and Montenegro, future cooperation, development of tourism, cultural ties, and mutual visits.

At the invitation of the Ambassador, the Mayor of Budva Marko Carević also attended the reception and congratulated the participants on the Independence Day of the Republic of Armenia, emphasizing the active involvement of the Armenian community in the development of Budva.

On September 22, a working lunch in honor of Ambassador Ashot Hovakimian was hosted by Branka Bošnjak, Vice Speaker of the Montenegrin Parliament and Head of the newly established Montenegro-Armenia Parliamentary Friendship Group, attended by Miodrag Lekić, Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on International Relations, and other officials. Branka Bošnjak and Ashot Hovakimian mentioned in their speeches that Montenegro and Armenia have had friendly relations since the Soviet years, Yerevan and Podgorica (formerly Titograd) were sister cities; it is necessary to breathe new life into the already established traditions and to revive that partnership. Official reciprocal visits and organization of cultural events have to boost inter-parliamentary relations. In that sense, the importance of the solemn celebration in 2022 of the 175th anniversary of the first edition of the epic poem "Mountain Wreath" by the prominent Montenegrin politician and poet Petar II Petrović Njegoš (published in the Mekhitarist printing house in Vienna in 1847) was especially emphasized.
