“Armenia at the University of Pardubice”

The working visit of Ambassador Ashot Hovakimian to the Pardubice Region of the Czech Republic on May 3 was marked by the Ambassador’s visit to the University of Pardubice, where he was received by the Rector of the University prof. Libor Čapek and the University leadership and where he further participated in the “Armenia at the University of Pardubice” event, dedicated to the large-scale cooperation the University has developed with Armenian counterparts.

During the meeting with the Rector prof. Libor Čapek, the Vice-Rectors for External Affairs and for Education and Quality Dr. Petra Bajerová and Dr. Pavel Panoch and the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Philosophy Dr. Jiří Kubeš, the sides positively evaluated the already existing cooperation between the University of Pardubice and Armenian institutions, among which the Academy of Sciences of RA, the Armenian State Pedagogical University and the Yerevan State University. The sides are currently cooperating in the fields of history and archaeological research and inclusive education. The active sharing of experience and academic and student exchanges between the Department of Education of the Faculty of Arts and Philosophy and Yerevan State Pedagogical University under the coordination of Dr. Zdenka Šándorová and Prof. Karel Rýdl, both within bilateral and Erasmus+ frameworks, were highly praised. Further the on-going cooperation in the archaeological sphere and the activity of the Czech archaeological expeditions to Armenia were commended: the Czech expeditionary group, led by prominent professor Dr. Jan Frolik and his team and working on the survey of archaeological sites within the project “Apostolus” in 2016- 2019 further followed with the project “Hayastan” in 2019-2021, jointly implemented within the cooperation between the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography of the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia, the Czech Academy of Sciences and further with the Faculty of Arts of the Pardubice University.

After Rector Libor Čapek having briefed the Ambassador on the structure and objectives of the University and Ambassador Ashot Hovakimian, on his part, having presented the developments in the relevant fields in Armenia, the sides agreed upon considering expanding the traditions of fruitful cooperation to other spheres of activity, among which fundamental sciences, high-tech, conservation and restoration of artifacts, etc.

After the meetings Ambassador Ashot Hovakimian proceeded to the Faculty of Arts and Philosophy to attend the event “Armenia at the University of Pardubice”, where the Ambassador, together with the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Philosophy Dr. Jiří Kubeš delivered opening remarks, highly praising the outcomes of the cooperation between Pardubice University and its Armenian counterparts.

Dr. Zdenka Šándorová and Prof. Karel Rýdl, with the participation of the Armenian students currently on study at Pardubice University under the Erasmus+ program, presented the cooperation framework on special education between the Department of Education of the Faculty of Arts and Philosophy and Yerevan State Pedagogical University.

Then followed the presentation of the research activities and findings made in Armenia by the Czech archaeological expeditions headed by Dr. Jan Frolík and his team, among which Ing. Jiří Šindelář and MA Tomáš Belov. The event was online joined by the Armenian counterparts from the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography of the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia Dr. Boris Gasparyan and Dr. Artur Petrosyan. The team working on the project extensively presented the results of the 5-year activity of the expedition missions in Armenia. During the archaeological expedition the team conducted excavations and studies at the caves in Areni, where the evidence of wine-making from 6,000 years ago were unearthed. Using modern technologies, the team has succeeded in reconstructing the face-models of the inhabitants of the local settlements dating back to that period. Further outcomes of the expeditions were 3D documentation of selected monuments and the surrounding environment of the area.

The students from the University of Pardubice which had joined Dr. Frolik and his team during their expeditions to Armenia as well shared their experiences with the audience and Dr. Frolik briefed those present about future plans on the continuation of the 3-rd phase of the project.
