The Armenian Delegation Participated at the Third “Prague Process” Ministerial Conference

 On 19-20 September the third Prague ProcessMinisterial Conference was held in Bratislava under the Slovak Presidency of the Council of the EU. The Armenian delegation headed by Mr. Tigran Seiranian, Ambassador of the Republic of Armenia to the Czech and Slovak republics participated at the Conference. The event was chaired by Mr. Robert Kaliňák, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior of the Slovak Republic.

The Prague Process is a political process aimed at creating and developing partnership among the participating countries in the area of migration. This format of cooperation and information exchange is conducted between 50 countries, including EU Member States, Eastern Partnership and other countries.

Ministers, chairmen of migration services and high level officials of 47 countries gathered at the Conference reassured their commitment to the Process, addressed the most pressing migration issues and have moved towards decisions which have the strength to positively shape tomorrow's migration policies.

Speakers at the Conference underlined that solutions to the challenges in various migration related spheres such as border management, asylum, readmission, irregular migration should be elaborated collectively.

The head of the Armenian delegation presented the results of the implementation of the Prague Process Action Plan 2012-2016 in Armenia and underlined the commitment of the country to continue cooperation in this important format. The Ambassador of Armenia welcomed the Czech Republic initiative on creation of the Training Academy on migration issues.

In his remarks Ambassador Seiranian also touched upon the situation in the Republic of Armenia resulting from the Syrian crisis. In particular, he noted that Armenia has received more than 20 thousand refugees from Syria and Iraq, and has one of the highest rates among the European countries on number of Syrians provided with protection per capita of population.  The Armenian diplomat underlined that while some immigrants due to their own abilities and government support were able to integrate into the Armenian society, however, the Government of the Republic of Armenia needs assistance in this matter and anticipates the support of the relevant European institutions.

The Ministerial Conference resulted in the adoption of the Joint Declaration which paved the way for continuation of joint cooperation and gave a mandate to the Process for the years 2017-2021. The document envisages that till the end of 2016 an expert meeting will take place which will elaborate Action Plan 2017-2021 for the Process based on the assessment of current situation and challenges.
